Sometimes referred to as Qiqong, Chi Kung exercises predate Tai Chi as a form of energy based exercises. They are generally more static than Tai Chi and therefore more easy to practice and require less room. Although practised by martial artists for energy the movements themselves are not martial in application.
These movements are also based on energy system of the body recognised by Traditional Chinese Medicine and other health systems as the method of transporting energy throughout the body. Posture, breathing, co-ordination and balance are all emphasised during the practice of the various exercises that exist.
They are an excellent method of exercise to use as a warm up before more intense exercise routines and will energise the body and prepare the mind for more arduous exercise or can be used as a cool down to recover after a session. They are also beneficial in their own right and much research has been done to prove their effectiveness in the area of health promotion for conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, breathing problems etc.
